Vijaya Ekadashi

~ The Ekadashi That Grants Victory ~

Vijaya Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Phalguna. As the name “Vijaya” means “victory,” this sacred Ekadashi is renowned for removing obstacles, destroying sinful reactions, and granting success in both spiritual and righteous endeavors. The scriptures glorify this Ekadashi as a powerful vrata that bestows the blessings of Lord Hari and helps devotees overcome life’s greatest challenges.

~ The Sacred Story of Vijaya Ekadashi ~

Once, Maharaja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna. In reply, Lord Krishna narrated an ancient conversation between Devarshi Narada and Lord Brahma.

Narada Muni once asked Lord Brahma about the significance of this Ekadashi. Lord Brahma explained that it is known as Vijaya Ekadashi, and that observing it destroys sinful reactions accumulated over many lifetimes while granting victory and success.

To illustrate its glory, Brahma narrated a famous pastime from the life of Lord Sri Ramachandra. During His exile in the forest, Lord Ram, along with Mother Sita and Lakshmana, resided in Panchavati. There, the demon king Ravana abducted Mother Sita and carried her away to Lanka. Deeply distressed, Lord Ram and Lakshmana began searching for her everywhere.

During their search, they met the noble bird Jatayu, who informed them about Ravana’s abduction before leaving his body. Later, Lord Ram formed an alliance with Sugriva, defeated Vali, and sent Hanuman to search for Mother Sita. Hanuman eventually discovered her in Lanka and returned with the news. Determined to rescue Mother Sita, Lord Ram marched toward Lanka with Sugriva and the vast Vanara army. Upon reaching the shore of the ocean, however, a great challenge stood before them—the vast sea separating them from Lanka.

Lord Ram asked Lakshmana how they could cross such an immense ocean. Lakshmana suggested consulting the great sage Bakadalbhya Rishi, who resided nearby and possessed profound spiritual wisdom. Lord Ram respectfully approached the sage and requested guidance on crossing the ocean and defeating Ravana. Recognizing Lord Ram as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bakadalbhya Rishi humbly advised Him to observe Vijaya Ekadashi, which falls during the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna. The sage explained that anyone who faithfully observes this sacred vrata receives divine assistance, removes obstacles, and attains victory in righteous endeavors.

Following the sage’s instructions, Lord Ram observed the Vijaya Ekadashi fast with great devotion. He worshipped Lord Vishnu, remained absorbed in spiritual practices, and spent the day and night engaged in devotion. By the power of Vijaya Ekadashi and the blessings of Lord Hari, all obstacles were removed. Soon after, Lord Ram successfully crossed the ocean, reached Lanka, defeated Ravana, rescued Mother Sita, and achieved complete victory.

Thus, Vijaya Ekadashi became renowned as the Ekadashi that grants success, protection, and victory to sincere devotees.

Vijaya Ekadashi reminds us that true victory comes not through material strength alone, but through devotion, surrender, and the mercy of Lord Hari. Just as Lord Ram observed this sacred Ekadashi before conquering seemingly impossible obstacles, devotees who sincerely observe this vrata receive divine guidance, protection, and success on their spiritual journey.
