Utpanna Ekadashi
Utpanna Ekadashi
~ The Appearance Day of Ekadashi Devi and the Victory Over Sin ~
Utpanna Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Margashirsha. This sacred Ekadashi holds a unique and special position among all Ekadashis because it marks the divine appearance of Ekadashi Devi, the spiritual potency of Lord Vishnu who helps conditioned souls overcome sinful reactions and progress toward pure devotion.
The scriptures glorify Utpanna Ekadashi as the beginning of the annual Ekadashi cycle. By observing this sacred vrata with faith and devotion, one becomes free from sinful reactions, gains spiritual strength, and receives the mercy of Lord Hari. This Ekadashi is especially beneficial for those seeking victory over material desires and advancement in Krishna consciousness.
~ The Sacred Story of Utpanna Ekadashi ~
The glories of Utpanna Ekadashi are described in the Bhavishya Uttara Purana through a conversation between Lord Krishna and Maharaja Yudhishthira.
Once, Maharaja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the significance of the Ekadashi that occurs during the Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha and requested Him to explain its origin and benefits.
Lord Krishna narrated the ancient history of the appearance of Ekadashi Devi. Long ago, a powerful demon named Mura terrorized the demigods and created disturbances throughout the universe. Unable to defeat him, the demigods approached Lord Vishnu and sought His protection.
Lord Vishnu engaged in a fierce battle with Mura that continued for thousands of years. Eventually, the Lord entered a cave in Badarikashrama to rest briefly. Seeing the Lord apparently asleep, the demon Mura decided to attack Him. At that very moment, a dazzling and effulgent divine maiden emerged from the body of Lord Vishnu. Possessing extraordinary spiritual power, she immediately challenged the demon and defeated him in battle. Within moments, the mighty Mura was destroyed.
When Lord Vishnu awoke, He saw the slain demon and the radiant maiden standing before Him. Pleased with her devotion and service, the Lord asked who she was. The divine maiden offered her obeisances and explained that she had manifested from the Lord’s own spiritual energy to protect Him and destroy the demon.
Lord Vishnu became greatly pleased and bestowed a special benediction upon her:
“Since you appeared on the eleventh lunar day (Ekadashi), you shall be known as Ekadashi Devi. Whoever observes fasting on this sacred day and worships Me with devotion will become freed from sinful reactions and ultimately attain My eternal abode.”
Thus, the appearance day of Ekadashi Devi became known as Utpanna Ekadashi. Since that time, devotees throughout the world have observed Ekadashi to receive the mercy of Lord Vishnu and the blessings of Ekadashi Devi.
