Pavitropana Ekadashi
Pavitropana Ekadashi
~ The Ekadashi of Purification and Renewed Devotion ~
Pavitraropana Ekadashi is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Shravana. The word Pavitra means “purity” and Aropana means “offering” or “placing.” This sacred Ekadashi is closely associated with the ceremonial offering of sanctified threads or garlands to Lord Vishnu and marks a special opportunity for devotees to renew their commitment to devotional service.
Falling during the holy month of Shravana, Pavitraropana Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious for purification, spiritual advancement, and receiving the mercy of Lord Hari. It also marks the beginning of important devotional celebrations that culminate in the appearance of Lord Balarama and the Jhulan Yatra festival.
~ The Sacred Story of Pavitropana Ekadashi ~
The scriptures explain that throughout the year devotees may unknowingly commit mistakes in their worship and devotional practices. Pavitraropana Ekadashi provides a sacred opportunity to seek forgiveness, purify one’s devotion, and rededicate oneself to the service of the Lord.
On this day, devotees offer Pavitra garlands or sacred threads to the Deities of Lord Vishnu, Krishna, and their divine expansions. This offering symbolizes the devotee’s heartfelt prayer:
“O Lord, please purify my heart, accept my service, and allow me to remain engaged in Your devotional service.”
The Lord is especially pleased by sincere worship performed on this Ekadashi. Scriptures glorify that fasting, chanting, and devotional service performed on this day grant immense spiritual benefit and help awaken deeper devotion.
