Pasankusa Ekadashi
Pasankusa Ekadashi
~ The Ekadashi That Frees One from Sin and Grants the Mercy of Lord Padmanabha ~
Pasankusa Ekadashi, also known as Papankusha Ekadashi, is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Ashwin. The word Papankusha signifies the divine power that removes sinful reactions and guides the soul toward the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu. This sacred Ekadashi is especially dedicated to Lord Padmanabha, a beautiful form of Lord Vishnu, and is glorified in the Padma Purana for its immense spiritual potency.
The scriptures explain that observing Pasankusa Ekadashi with faith and devotion destroys accumulated sins, fulfills righteous desires, benefits one’s ancestors, and grants progress on the path of bhakti. It is considered one of the most powerful Ekadashis for attaining spiritual purification and the mercy of Lord Hari.
~ The Sacred Story of Pasankusa Ekadashi ~
The glories of Pasankusa Ekadashi are described in the Padma Purana through a conversation between Lord Brahma and the great sage Narada Muni.
Once, Narada Muni approached Lord Brahma and inquired about the Ekadashi that occurs during the bright fortnight of Ashwin. He requested Lord Brahma to explain its significance, benefits, and the proper method of observance.
Lord Brahma replied that this sacred day is known as Pasankusa Ekadashi and is especially dear to Lord Padmanabha. He explained that observing this Ekadashi with sincerity grants the merit of many great sacrifices, pilgrimages, and charitable activities. Lord Brahma further explained that throughout life, human beings unknowingly accumulate countless sinful reactions through actions, words, and thoughts. These reactions bind the soul to repeated birth and death and create obstacles on the path of spiritual progress.
However, Lord Padmanabha, out of His unlimited compassion, has provided Pasankusa Ekadashi as a powerful means of purification. By observing this sacred vrata, worshipping Lord Vishnu, chanting His holy names, and engaging in devotional service, a devotee becomes freed from sinful reactions and gradually develops pure devotion. The scriptures further glorify that even those who have committed serious offenses can attain purification through sincere observance of Pasankusa Ekadashi. The spiritual merit obtained on this day not only benefits the devotee but also brings blessings to family members and departed ancestors.
Thus, Pasankusa Ekadashi became renowned as the Ekadashi that destroys sins, grants divine protection, and leads the soul toward the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu.
