Kamada Ekadashi
~ The Ekadashi That Fulfills Desires and Destroys Sins ~
~ The Sacred Story of Kamada Ekadashi ~
Once, Maharaja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi that falls during the month of Chaitra and the benefits of observing it. Pleased by the inquiry, Lord Krishna narrated the ancient history of Kamada Ekadashi.
Long ago, there was a magnificent city called Ratnapura, ruled by the powerful King Pundarika. The city was filled with celestial beings, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and Apsaras who regularly entertained the king through music and dance. Among the Gandharvas lived a handsome singer named Lalit and his beautiful wife Lalita. The couple shared deep affection and were inseparable. One day, Lalit was performing before King Pundarika’s royal assembly. While singing, his mind became absorbed in thoughts of his beloved wife. Distracted by his attachment, he lost concentration, forgot the melody, and sang incorrectly before the king.
A serpent attendant in the royal court immediately pointed out Lalit’s mistake. Furious at this disrespectful performance, King Pundarika cursed Lalit to become a horrifying man-eating demon.
Instantly, Lalit’s celestial form disappeared. He transformed into a dreadful monster with a gigantic body, enormous arms, frightening eyes, and a terrifying appearance. Driven by the curse, he wandered through forests in constant misery. Seeing her beloved husband suffer such a terrible fate, Lalita was heartbroken. Determined to save him, she wandered through forests, mountains, and holy places searching for a solution.
After a long search, she reached the sacred Vindhya Mountains and met the great sage Shringi Rishi. Falling at his feet, she narrated the entire story and begged for a way to free her husband from the curse. Moved by her sincerity and devotion, the sage advised her to faithfully observe the upcoming Kamada Ekadashi fast. He explained that the spiritual merit gained from this Ekadashi was powerful enough to destroy even the most severe sinful reactions and curses.
Following the sage’s instructions, Lalita observed Kamada Ekadashi with complete faith and devotion. She fasted, worshipped Lord Vishnu, chanted His holy names, and prayed sincerely for her husband’s welfare. On Dwadashi, after completing the vrata, she offered all the spiritual merit of her observance for the liberation of her husband.
By the extraordinary power of Kamada Ekadashi, Lalit’s curse was immediately destroyed. He regained his original celestial Gandharva form and was reunited with Lalita. Together they returned to their heavenly abode, glorifying the mercy of Lord Hari and the greatness of Kamada Ekadashi.
Kamada Ekadashi teaches the power of sincere faith, devotion, and prayer. Just as Lalita’s dedicated observance of this sacred vrata freed her husband from a terrible curse, devotees who faithfully observe Kamada Ekadashi receive the mercy of Lord Hari, become purified of sinful reactions, and move closer to the ultimate goal of pure devotion.
