Bhaimi Ekadashi
Bhaimi (Jaya) Ekadashi
~ The Ekadashi That Frees One from Ghostly Existence ~
~ The Sacred Story of Bhaimi (Jaya) Ekadashi ~
Once, Maharaja Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the Ekadashi that falls during the bright fortnight of Magha and its significance. In response, Lord Krishna narrated an ancient pastime.
Long ago, in the heavenly kingdom of Indra, the celestial residents enjoyed great happiness. During one grand musical assembly in the beautiful Nandana Gardens, many Gandharvas and Apsaras were singing and dancing before Indra. Among them were a celestial musician named Malyavan and a beautiful Apsara named Pushpavati. As the performance began, Malyavan and Pushpavati became deeply attracted to one another. Their minds became absorbed in thoughts of each other instead of serving Lord Indra. As a result, they lost their rhythm, forgot their performance, and disrupted the entire assembly.
Seeing this disrespect, Indra became furious and cursed them both to immediately lose their celestial forms and take birth as Pisachas (ghostly beings) on Earth. Instantly deprived of their heavenly beauty and happiness, Malyavan and Pushpavati fell to the Himalayan mountains in miserable ghostly bodies. They wandered through harsh forests, suffering intense cold, hunger, thirst, and constant distress. Their senses no longer functioned properly, and they experienced great sorrow.
One day, while suffering in the mountains, they unknowingly observed Jaya Ekadashi. Due to their miserable condition, they neither ate nor drank anything throughout the day and night. They spent the night awake beneath a Peepal tree, shivering in the cold and remembering their unfortunate fate. Although they did not know it, they had perfectly observed the sacred Ekadashi fast.
As Dwadashi dawned the next morning, the powerful merit of Jaya Ekadashi immediately destroyed the effects of Indra’s curse. Their ghostly forms disappeared, and they regained their original radiant celestial bodies adorned with divine garments and ornaments. At that very moment, a celestial airplane arrived to carry them back to the heavenly planets. Returning to Indra’s kingdom, they offered their respects before him.
Surprised to see them freed so quickly, Indra asked how they had escaped his powerful curse. Malyavan explained that by the mercy of Lord Vishnu and the accidental observance of Jaya Ekadashi, they had been purified and liberated from their ghostly existence. Hearing this, Indra glorified the greatness of Jaya Ekadashi and praised all devotees who faithfully observe this sacred day dedicated to Lord Hari.
Bhaimi (Jaya) Ekadashi reminds us that even an unknowingly observed Ekadashi can bestow extraordinary blessings when touched by the mercy of Lord Hari. By sincerely observing this sacred vrata through fasting, chanting, worship, and charity, devotees can become purified and draw closer to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna.
