Amalaki Ekadashi

~ The Ekadashi of Divine Protection and Liberation ~

Amalaki Ekadashi is observed during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Phalguna. This sacred Ekadashi is especially dear to Lord Vishnu and is associated with the worship of the holy Amalaki (Amla) tree, which is considered spiritually purifying and highly auspicious. The scriptures declare that observing Amalaki Ekadashi destroys sinful reactions, grants divine protection, and ultimately helps one attain the eternal abode of Lord Hari.

~ The Sacred Story of Amalaki Ekadashi ~

Once, King Mandhata asked the great sage Vasishtha Muni to describe a sacred observance that could bestow eternal spiritual benefit. In response, Vasishtha Muni glorified Amalaki Ekadashi and narrated a wonderful pastime demonstrating its extraordinary power.

Long ago, there existed a prosperous kingdom called Vaidisha, ruled by the pious and righteous King Chitraratha. The entire kingdom was devoted to Vedic culture and the worship of Lord Vishnu. The citizens faithfully observed Ekadashi, performed devotional service, and lived peacefully under the king’s noble rule. When Amalaki Ekadashi arrived during the bright fortnight of Phalguna, King Chitraratha and all the citizens observed the fast with great devotion. After bathing, they gathered near a sacred Amalaki tree and worshipped Lord Vishnu and Lord Parashurama. Throughout the day and night, they chanted the holy names of the Lord, offered prayers, and remained awake performing devotional activities.

At that time, a hunter happened to pass through the forest. His livelihood depended on killing animals, and he had accumulated many sinful reactions. Exhausted from his day’s activities, he stopped near the gathering and watched the devotees worshipping Lord Vishnu beneath the Amalaki tree. Captivated by the devotional atmosphere, the hunter remained there throughout the night listening to the glories of Lord Krishna and observing the Ekadashi celebrations. Without intending to do so, he also fasted and stayed awake the entire night.

After some time, the hunter passed away. Due to the immense spiritual merit gained by unknowingly observing Amalaki Ekadashi and hearing the Lord’s glories, he was reborn as King Vasuratha, a powerful, righteous, and devoted ruler blessed with great prosperity and devotion to Lord Vishnu. One day, while hunting in the forest, King Vasuratha became separated from his companions and fell asleep beneath a tree. A group of hostile tribesmen, who harbored hatred toward the king, found him sleeping and decided to kill him. They attacked with swords, arrows, spears, and various weapons, but none of them could even touch the sleeping king. Suddenly, a dazzling divine woman emerged from the king’s body. Brilliantly adorned and holding a blazing discus, she destroyed all the attackers within moments.

When the king awoke, he was astonished to see his enemies lying dead around him. Wondering who had protected him, he heard a heavenly voice proclaim:
“The Supreme Lord Sri Keshava protects those who sincerely take shelter of Him. By the power of your devotion and the merit gained from Amalaki Ekadashi, the Lord Himself has protected you.”

Realizing the Lord’s mercy, King Vasuratha became overwhelmed with gratitude and continued ruling his kingdom in devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Amalaki Ekadashi teaches that even a single moment of association with devotees and devotional service can transform one’s destiny. By sincerely observing this sacred Ekadashi through fasting, chanting, worship, and charity, one attracts the mercy of Lord Vishnu, receives divine protection, and steadily advances toward the ultimate goal of life—pure devotion to the Lord.
